Pelham Theater

Lavallee Brensinger Architects were so impressed by the White K-13 in the new gymnasium that they utilized Tan K-13 in strategic locations to absorb unwanted reverberation in the seating areas of the new theater. With the stage left untreated, performers are able to project clean clear sound for all attending to hear once and only once. The 1.5” of Tan K-13 provides a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05 on the fluted metal deck substrate.

Attention to detail is evident in this application of SonaSpray “fc” on the ceiling and SonaKrete on the walls of the two large light wells at the Winthrop Middle/High School in Winthrop Massachusetts. Adding to the complexity of the application and
troweling of the material was the fact that the light wells are larger at the top than the opening, making access difficult. The end result of this high performance acoustical application speaks for itself.

There may not be a more demanding environment for reverberation control and acoustical performance than in a high school full of teenaged students, just ask any teacher. Strategically placed floating clouds, in conjunction with the K-13 application, creates a formal appearance with a contemporary flare. With all of the hallways, and a select few classrooms such as band and chorus, the new Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. High School is providing a peaceful sanctuary for all.

Lesley University

Lesley University, Lunder Arts Center, Studio

Whispering will help, but this cathedral ceiling study space required an acoustical treatment that would provide high performance without distracting from the old timber frame. Renovated from an old historic church, termination strips were installed against all the wood trusses to provide a clean line along the rough cut wood. The results create a seamless blend of modern acoustical control within the old architecture.

SonaSpray “fc” and SonaKrete were both utilized to maintain the clean hard lines of this new Lesley University Facility. Poured in place concrete was the substrate for both products which removed the need for any additional treatments to the base construction. Custom colors of both products were used in various areas to mimic the original concrete color of the structure. Performing a big job very quietly with an N.R.C Rating of over .80 is the key.

This dramatic clerestory not only lets light pour into the newly renovated Quinnipiac four story atrium, it skims light directly across the .75” of SonaSpray “fc” that was installed. Due to the side lighting, it was extremely important that texture and surface variance was kept to a minimum. For this reason, the product was lightly rolled following the application to provide this beautiful flat surface.

It took a lot of work and coordination between the painter and K-13 applicator, but the results speak for themselves. Bright white structural steel and MEP's with jet black K-13 insets makes for a dramatic and eye catching look at the new Innovation Center. Soaring ceilings in public spaces require a special focus on acoustical performance and reverberation control. The black K-13 application fits the bill perfectly without even being noticed.

With over 20 foot high ceilings in all the classrooms and shop areas, Turowski2 Architects knew they were going to have to get creative in providing an enjoyable learning and working environment. The selection of .75" of SonaSpray "fc" provided the NRC Ratings they were demanding without any modifications to HVAC, lighting or vacuum systems. Direct to the deck, the high performance treatment is out of the way and maintenance free.

Nothing can escalate quicker than noise in a college dining facility. The higher the capacity, the greater the decibel level will increase. Black K-13 not only gives the illusion of expanse, but more importantly provides a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05 on the fluted metal deck. An aesthetic coating has been added to the beams to conceal the unattractive fireproofing and provide a cohesive appearance.

Bruner/Cott & Associates left nothing to chance in this spectacular new space at the Boston University East Campus Center. The specification of SonaKrete, which is troweled several times during the application, provides a very slight visual texture but is actually .75” thick with true Noise Reduction Coefficients of .75. This area could have easily been a home for 4 second reverberation times without this important focus on the details.

A safe and quiet environment for the students in the automotive and electrical shop at Pathfinder Voc-Tech High School in Palmer Massachusetts. Originally spray applied with a mineral fiber acoustical product, the ceiling was constantly flaking the itchy and irritating material. K-13 being a truly green recycled cellulose product, is now providing effective sound control along with bond strengths in excess of 250 pounds per square foot. Flaking and dusting are no longer an issue.

This striking before and after is a renovation of an old hockey rink converting it into a comfortable dining facility at the Phillips Academy in Andover Massachusetts. With minimal surface preparation, Light Grey K-13 was applied at 2.76", providing an R-value of 13 along with the superior acoustical performance of a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.00. Costs, aesthetics and thermal performance in a one pass application certainly highlights this multifaceted K-13 application.

Wesleyan University receives a second application following the walls at Fayerweather Hall. Usdan University Center houses this large open cafe with ceiling heights of over 20 feet. Acentech Incorporated, knowing acoustical performance would be paramount, utilized SonaKrete for another application to control reverberation within the space. Applied at .5”, the SonaKrete is providing a Noise Reduction Coefficient of .65 along with the aesthetics of a flat plaster look finish.

Acentech steps forward at Brown University specifying the recently released SonaKrete troweled finish acoustical product from International Cellulose Corporation of Houston Texas. This recently renovated 10,300 square foot cafeteria would grow to a deafening roar when filled to capacity, drawing complaints from diners and staff alike. A high end aesthetic finish was paramount for the owners. SonaKrete was applied at at thickness of .5" providing a Noise Reduction Coefficient of .80. The results were remarkable, just ask the staff.

Originally applied in 1991, the school thought it was time for a face lift. This open air cafe-type setting is actually the cafeteria at another Cavanaugh Tocci Associates application at the new Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth New Hampshire. K-13, applied at 1.5", Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05, is reducing reverberation in what is normally a deafening environment in schools. Along with controlling the acoustics, the K-13 visually softens the exposed fluted metal deck improving aesthetics.

This month's profile highlights the new music room recently completed. In conjunction with cloud diffusers, the application of 1.5" of Light Gray K-13, Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05, gives the space just enough brightness for band practice without the reverberation that would destroy the sound quality.

Sloped cathedral ceilings in every classroom mark the design of he recent expansion of the Charles River School in Dover Massachusetts. Applied at 1/2", over OSB, SonaSpray"fc" provided a Noise Reduction Coefficient of .65 with a GE light reflectivity of .85. The application allowed the architect to control reverberation without detracting from the architectural design of the structure.

This spectacular post and beam style construction is the new home for the High Mowing School in Wilton New Hampshire. Selecting K-13, applied at 2", not only provided superior Noise Reduction Coefficients of .95, but also concealed all conduit and wiring that was flush mounted on the drywall surface. The spray applied application also allowed the architect's design freedom without detracting form the appearance of the structure.

Overcrowding in our schools over the past 10 years has become a major problem. The proof is in this recent application of 1" of K-13 Beige to a former wood shop ceiling that now has been transformed into 3 classrooms for teaching English. The partition walls, that do not go all the way to the ceiling, in conjunction with the original black concrete ceiling, were creating reverberation across the entire area making it almost impossible for students to concentrate. The application provided an N.R.C. Rating of .95 along with some much needed light reflectivity.

Following last year's before and after Project Profile at the Cushman School, September 2002, Dartmouth School System looked for another opportunity to utilize K-13 for its multi-use application. With the old drop ceiling removed, the joists received a fresh coat of paint in the school colors and the application of 1.5" of white K-13 was the finishing touch. The teaching staff has never been more willing to have cafeteria duty now that the 4 second reverberation time has been drastically reduced.

With the renovations and additions of audio/visual equipment to this classroom at Babson College in Babson Park Massachusetts, the concrete plank ceiling looked more like a maze of conduit in a mechanical room than a classroom. Facilities Management chose SonaSpray"fc" to improve the aesthetics along with the dramatic acoustical improvements. Following this application, A.T.I. has been called back to do a conference center and an additional classroom. There are also two more classrooms planned for this year's summer break.

SonaSpray"fc", applied to a minimum thickness of 1/2", was the material specified to control sound deflection in this newly renovated study hall at Bridgewater State College. The concrete waffle had to be dealt with if the ceilings were to remain exposed and the Architects Forum of Newton Massachusetts had the answer. The contrast of the exposed edges and the SonaSpray"fc" within the waffle created a sharp clean appearance.

The once popular concrete waffle construction has been notorious for creating echo cambers throughout colleges across the county. Providence College, along with several others, have found the cure. SonaSpray applied a .5” Noise Reduction Coefficient of .65 can be applied to the bottom as well as the sides and top of the pan providing 2.5 times the floor space of acoustical material. This drastic application transforms this space from a cave to classroom in 1 day while improving the atheistic from the rough concrete surface.
