Pelham Gymnasium

Pelham High School

A gymnasium of this size would normally come with a 3 or 4 second reverberation time making a basketball game a deafening experience for parents and fans. Not this one! K-13 White, applied at 1.5”, not only makes this a bright beautiful space but it also has reverberation times down to what you might expect in a small classroom. No need for expensive hanging clouds and unattractive tectum panels at Pelham High School.

With the offices of several companies already utilizing K-13, SonaSpray “fc” and SonaKrete in the floors above, Title Boxing chose the material for acoustical control within the space and sound transmission for tenants above. The follow-up to last month's Project Profile is even more impressive. The second case study is Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor Connecticut. Here, the K-13 was applied for thermal and acoustical purposes, providing an R-Value of 15 and N.R.C. Ratings of 1.00. The application has survived 25 years of teenage boys in a gymnasium environment. Imagine what this would look like now if it was semi rigid fiberglass panels or homasote tiles?

The next time someone asks how durable K-13 and SonaSpray "fc" are, show them the next couple of Project Profiles. This first case study is Stafford Elementary School in Bristol Connecticut. The SonaSpray "fc" was applied in 1986 following an asbestos abatement project. This picture, taken in September of 2011, highlights the unparalleled resiliency of sprayed on cellulose based products. Can you find a gymnasium with a 25 year old drop ceiling that would look anything like this?

Who needs David Copperfield when you have Bargman Hendrie & Archetype? Product and color selection were paramount in this historic salvage of a near-teardown in New Bedford Massachusetts. Of course the finishing touch was 2" of Tan K-13 to offset the dark brown framing timbers. Aside from controlling acoustical reverberation, the application provided thermal properties to the uninsulated roof deck.

This beautiful application of K-13 was applied over form in place tiles that not only offer nothing in the way of acoustical performance, but left a lot to be desired aesthetically. Applied at a 2" thickness, the K-13 is providing an echo free environment for the students and faculty while enhancing the thermal performance of the roof assembly by 10. Additional cellulose materials were also utilized in fiberglass domes within the hallways to eliminate reverberation problems.

Peeling paint and tremendous reverberation have been haunting Nichols College for years. In ten days, and a 2” application of Beige K-13, the nightmare is over. Utilizing high air pressure, and minimal scraping and priming, the substrate was properly prepared to receive the new acoustical treatment. With reverberation reduced to a fraction of the original time and an end to falling paint chips, ask this owner what they think about K-13.

The tables are set for the first time in a long time. Unable to use this multipurpose space due to the 4 second reverberation time, K-13 Beige has been applied to the fluted metal deck for acoustical control. The availability of 5 standard manufacturer's colors allowed the owner to select a color that would conceal ball hits and extend overall aesthetics for the foreseeable future. Applied at 1.5", the K-13 absorbs 100% of the sound that comes in contact with it.

The students at Sabis Charter School in Springfield Massachusetts will never appreciate the acoustical performance of their new gymnasium, but the teachers and parents will. Applied at a 2" thickness over "N" type metal decking, the performance is striking as you walk into a room with such volume. The application is providing a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05 along with enhancing the heat loss with an R-value of 9.

Pitkin Community Center

An emotional tribute to the World Trade Center, the recently renovated Pitkin Community Center highlights a piece of steel from Ground Zero in New York City. K-13 was selected for a variety of reasons; 1st, K-13's ability to mask the old irregular substrate, 2nd, providing an R-Value of 14 and 3rd, Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.00. Major funding for the project was provided by a single family member who lost her husband in the attack.

Would you like to know what a 1/2" application of SonaSpray "fc" can do? Just ask the folks at the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod in Mashpee Massachusetts. This standard block and drywall ceiling gymnasium was a painful environment to be in while hosting activities. Completed in 4 days, the application was retrofitted without any additional work required. The Noise Reduction Coefficient of .65 has brought the reverberation under control and the staff is said to be resting comfortably.

You can't see it but it's there! Providing sound dampening along with the blackout effect, the K-13 black was applied behind the dramatic slat wood work on the walls. The 4" of K-13 is also supplying thermal insulation, R-19, to all exterior walls in the structure. The creative architecture by Imai Keller Moore Architects puts a fresh look on what is normally a predictable space.

Completed less than a year ago, this multimillion dollar gymnasium was recently retrofitted with Light Gray K-13 at the direction of Cavanaugh Tocci Associates, Inc. Deemed intolerable by the staff and faculty, something had to be done to reduce the 2.5 second reverberation times. The application of 1.5" provides a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05, greatly reducing overall noise and creating an enjoyable environment.

It only took five years, but the Mashpee School System found the money in the budget to take care of a dual problem at the K.C. Coombs School. Following years of pealing paint, due to improper priming, and acoustics that drove teachers from the gym, the metal deck ceiling received a 2.5" layer of White K-13. The application has been a major success with the sound control problem solved along with the drastic improvement in aesthetics. The School Department is already talking about the multi-purpose room for next year.

The Visitors to the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport Rhode Island will never realize what students had to deal with for years. The acoustics were unbearable in the work shop area. With fund raising always an issue, it is high praise when an application of K-13 becomes the area to spend those few dollars. This was the case recently when over 12,500 feet of visitor's center, wood shop area and boat building hall were treated with 1.5" of K-13. Years of cracked and broken tiles convinced the Cambridge School System to call for K-13. With the tiles removed, track and wire cut down, K-13 Beige was applied at a thickness of 1”, N.R.C. rating of .75. This multi purpose application improved the ceiling height, acoustical performance, appearance, and maintenance requirements for years to come. This application is the latest in a series for the Cambridge School Department.

When Sound Star Music was called in to install a state of the art sound system at the Portsmouth Christian Academy, they knew there was no point until they treated the space acoustically. As with hundreds of new gymnasiums/auditoriums, it's not until construction is complete that the owner realizes that the functions they would like to hold in the new space are not possible due to poor acoustical performance. K-13 installed at 1.5” Noise Reduction Coefficient of 1.05 has all but removed the reverberation in the gym.

This new facility at Noble & Greenough School in Dedham Massachusetts had planned to have painted precast plank ceilings in the wrestling and aerobics rooms. Closing in on the completion of the project, the realization of an acoustical problem in these two areas was extremely evident. Acoustical Thermal Insulators was called in to apply .75", N.R.C. Rating of .75, of SonaSpray "fc" to both ceilings. With the reverberation under control, this beautiful facility opened on time for arriving students.

Twenty year old semi rigid fiberglass panels had seen their day at this Dean College Gymnasium in Franklin Massachusetts. With 50% of the pebble finish missing from years of abuse, the ceiling had become an eyesore. A.T.I. was called in to apply 1" Beige K-13 directly over the exposed fiberglass board. All existing mechanicals, lighting, joists and basketball stanchions were protected during the 4 day operation. This quick and economical application has provided the college with a bright new look to begin this season's basketball schedule.
